Early Career Psychologist Offers

We have been so busy with our Provisional Psychologists approaching General Registration lately that we thought it is about time we released some new products to support the early years of General Registration.

Many of you remember the daunting feeling you had when you started your first role as a Provisional Psychologist, if you have forgotten then have a look at some of the experiences our Director Susie Upton shared on her early years as a psychologist to refresh your memory.

When that day finally arrived, when you received your general registration and become a full-fledged psychologist, it was likely a moment of intense joy, relief, and pride. Lets be honest, there is nothing easy about the pathway to becoming a psychologist.

Approaching General Registration also re-visits some of these feelings as you enter a new phase in your career, often as a leader, a senior practitioner or an independent contractor. When we are focused on a goal for so long we can oversight what it feels like immediately after we achieve it, and that excitement, joy and pride can also come with some debilitating fear. Many provisional psychologists are quick to leave their 1:17 ratio of supervision and 60 to 120 hours of professional development requirements behind them. At first it can feel refreshing and exciting, filled with independence and ownership of a pathway you have so long sought to reach the end of. What you may soon realise is that those support mechanisms you had surrounding you, have been an armour and safety net you no longer have, and that being solely responsible for the care of clients can be daunting.

Be assured, these feelings are normal. Despite these insecurities and mixed feelings, you have trained for this moment, you are ready and you have proven your knowledge and abilities to be able to call yourself a psychologist. As a Psychologist your supervisors are now your peers, and we consult with our peers for guidance throughout the course of our entire career. What you will quickly feel is that the relationship with your supervisor has changed, what doesn't change is how important it is to have someone to ask questions and seek guidance when you are unsure. Acknowledge your fears and use them to gain a deeper understanding of the knowledge you need to support your clients. Continue to grow and learn, and know that you have removed the armour and you are on a new pathway, one that will always have you seeking opportunities to grow and develop your knowledge and confidence as you progress and influence others.

Today we are here to provide you with acknowledgement that you no longer need the armour, but perhaps there is an easier way to transition with a layer of support and consultation that will make your early years as a psychologist, the next layer in a foundation of your success.

If you are a generally registered psychologist then you qualify to take up one of the following 2 offers. In accordance with the Registration Standard (CPD) psychologists must complete a minimum of 30 hours of CPD activities annually during the period 1 December until 30 November. At least 10 of these hours must be peer consultation. Psychologist Hub have over 30 Board Approved Supervisors able to offer peer consultation in the form of individual or group supervision. Get started on meeting your CPD requirements as a generally registered psychologist through Psychologist Hub today HERE.
