Group Supervision Session: Working with Resistant Clients
During our practice we encounter clients that are resistant to the process of intervention. This can damage rapport within the session and can also lead to the client disengaging from treatment. As psychologists it is important that we reflect on the therapy process by being able to identify the type of resistance the client is experiencing and learn to notice what is going on for both the client and us. It is useful to develop strategies to assist the client in overcoming their resistance, along with learning how not to react to the client when we feel challenged.
Why is this group important?
It is important for psychologists to be able to develop skills to manage resistant clients and learn how resistance can impact on them.
How do you recommend supervisees prepare for the group?
To prepare for this group, bring along some case notes on one or two of the clients you are struggling with at the moment to gain some ideas on what to do next.
How can group supervision enhance learning and development for provisional psychologists?
Group supervision is an imperative part of learning and development for all psychologists. The group process enables the opportunity to share experiences, learn new skills and just to know that you are not alone on this journey.
What client population will the group supervision focus on?
The skills developed in the group session are suitable for use on all populations.
Who do you recommend attends the groups supervision?
All psychologists and provisional psychologists would benefit from this session, as they will be reflecting on being able to identify resistance in their clients, along with their own contribution to the resistance process.
