Working with Children

We recently spoke to Serena Lee about her upcoming group supervision sessions on working with children. The groups Serena is running this year have been running with strong attendance for some time, so we thought we would ask her a few questions about the groups, what inspired her to run them and what some of her supervisees take away from the group. Check out her interview here.

What is involved in this group?
This group involves 2 topics across 2 sessions. The first topic explores different creative strategies when working with children. It involves a PowerPoint presentation and Q&A/Case Discussions. The second topic discusses common ethical concerns/dilemmas to consider when working with children. This will be Q&A and case discussions based.

Why is this group important?
It is important for psychologists to be able to provide practical, and tailored strategies to explain concepts in an age-appropriate way for children. This can have significant impact on how rapport is established and how the child engages in therapy. Given the nature of working with children involves working with relevant stakeholders (e.g., parents, school, allied health professionals), it is important to understand the relevant ethical guidelines and develop ways to manage the potential dilemmas.

What inspired you to run this group?
I have been working with children, adolescents and families for the past 5-6 years. I loved finding creative ideas and resources to make my sessions fun and more engaging. During my work, I have also encountered various complex ethical dilemmas. I wanted to run this group to inspire other psychologists to be creative and develop a better understanding and process of the ethics related to children, adolescents and families.

What have attendees say about this group?
The common feedback I get from those that attend is;
• Having more ideas on how to work with children creatively.
• Improved understanding on how to apply ethics in their work.
• Finds the case examples provided beneficial to consolidate their understanding.

Who do you suggest attends this group?
All psychologists and provisional psychologists who work with children, adolescents, families or anyone who wants to increase their knowledge in this area.
