Don’t Wait for the Job to Be Advertised

The psychology job market can be competitive, and waiting for the perfect role to be advertised may mean missing out on valuable opportunities. As a provisional psychologist, taking a proactive approach to securing employment or placement can set you apart and help you gain the experience you need. Here’s how you can take control of your job search rather than waiting for an ad to appear.

1. Identify Your Ideal Workplace

Rather than applying to any available position, think about the type of organisation or setting that aligns with your career goals. Do you want to work in private practice, a hospital, a school, or community services? Research potential employers, including those that may not be actively advertising, and develop a list of places where you'd love to work.

2. Network, Network, Network

The psychology profession is built on relationships. Start connecting with industry professionals by attending networking events, supervision groups, workshops, and webinars. Engage with psychologists and employers on LinkedIn and professional forums. If you're part of a supervision group, ask your peers if they know of any opportunities or if they can introduce you to someone in their network.

3. Reach Out to Potential Employers Directly

Many roles are filled through internal referrals or before they are even posted online. Sending a well-crafted email to a practice or organisation expressing your interest in working with them can open doors. Highlight your qualifications, your current placement or supervision requirements, and how you can add value to their team. Be sure to showcase your strengths, your understanding of the internship process, and how your skills align with their needs. A brief mention of your knowledge in assessments, therapeutic approaches, or relevant casework experience can make a strong impression. You’d be surprised how many employers will consider hiring when the right candidate appears, even if they weren’t actively looking.

You may also be eligible for supervision funding, which could make it easier for an employer to take you on. Mentioning this in your expression of interest can help ease potential concerns around the cost of board-approved supervision. Reach out to us to learn more about available funding opportunities.

4. Consider Volunteering or Internships

If a paid role isn’t available, offering to volunteer can be a great foot in the door. Many organisations welcome additional support, and this can lead to a paid position once they see your skills and commitment in action. Plus, it helps build your practical experience and network within the industry.

5. Be Active on Professional Platforms

Make sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date, reflecting your experience, skills, and career aspirations. Join psychology-specific groups and forums where job postings may be shared before they go public. Platforms like Seek, Provisional Psychologist Hub’s job board, and PsyXchange are also excellent places to find opportunities.

6. Tailor Your Applications and Follow Up

If you do see a job advertisement, don’t just send a generic resume. Tailor your cover letter to highlight why you are specifically interested in the organisation and role. If you’ve applied but haven’t heard back, don’t be afraid to follow up. A polite email or phone call can show initiative and keep you on their radar.

Be Proactive! What do you have to lose.

Being proactive in your job search can significantly increase your chances of finding a role that aligns with your goals and values. By reaching out, networking, and staying engaged in professional circles, you can position yourself as a strong candidate—even before a job is officially advertised.
